This collision was sufficient to damage the rivets of the ship in that area and icy cold water started entering the ship. The great was carrying twenty lifeboats that could hold about 1,178 people. The lifeboats were used to save people. A few hours later, nearby 2.05 in the morning, the bow of the ship was submerged and in an additional one 30 minutes, the unblemished ship was under the water.

It is very hard to pinpoint the exact location where the great sank. Parts of the ship were recovered based on the final distress call made by the crew. It was in the year 1985 that the ship was placed in the Atlantic Ocean lying some 3,925 meters under water. This was about 375 miles from St John's, which is in Newfoundland.
